Ottawa homeowners will learn this week if their property taxes are headed higher.

It's been four years since the last province wide property assessment.

The amount of your assessment is NOT a tax increase but it will form part of your 2013 tax bill.

The average increase in Ottawa house prices since 2008 has been 25%.

"There's great services around here. We live in an urban neighbourhood. I'm o.k. with paying what's fair. I just think if it's an outrageous increase, I think that wouldn't be fair," said Sarah Grand, Westboro homeowner.

“Certainly, taxes are always an issue. Nobody wants to pay them. But if you want live in this beautiful neighbourhood, I guess you'd better," said Lee Anne Frederickson, owner of the Dream Weaver, a new Westboro business.

Many people don’t know you can appeal your assessment if you think it's too high.

John Clark is an assessment expert with the Regional Group of companies.

"The assessors are, for the most part, very reasonable people and you can deal with them," said Clark. You just have to get them on the phone and say what your issues are. You can't just rant and rave with them. You have to know some facts."
