The Preston Street Business Improvement Association has announced that it's against plans to build a 35-storey condominium tower in the heart of Little Italy that, if constructed, would be the tallest building in the city.

The BIA said the plans for the building violate the zoning requirements for the Preston Street neighbourhood and would damage the "cottage-like nature" of the street.

Mastercraft Starwood Group, the condominium developer behind the project, pitched its proposal, called "Soho Italia," to Mayor Watson and several councillors in January.

The building plans call for a slim glass and concrete tower resembling a stack of plates. The design also calls for the creation of a museum of Italian culture in Ottawa.

An official building proposal and zoning request have yet to be submitted to the city.
