The Ottawa Police Association criticized media for broadcasting surveillance footage showing Const. Eric Czapnik rushing into the hospital after his stabbing in December 2009.

In a letter sent to many media outlets, including CTV News, the police union says the images sensationalize the case.

"On the 7th of March 2012, we relived much of that horrible experience when the media decided to show the video of Eric entering the emergency room," wrote the association's president Matt Skof.

Skof writes "the video shows the final moments of a human life; it was not ‘acted' or scripted."

In the statements closing the letter, Skof challenged Ottawa residents to think about how they feel about the video and asked "are we a civil society if we endorse the media when they sensationalize a horrible event?"

CTV News does not consider airing the footage sensational and deems the video a key piece of evidence in the case detailing the attack, the rescue and the arrest at the hospital.
