Gatineau police are asking for the public's help to identify a man who may have witnessed a suspicious fire that reduced a historic Catholic church in Aylmer to rubble.

Police have released a composite sketch of a man who was seen in the parking lot of St-Paul's Roman Catholic Church about 30 minutes before the fire started.

Police say the fire is likely linked to criminal activity. A police investigation led investigators to a gas can found near the church. There was also evidence the church was broken into.

The witness is described as between 35 and 45 years old. He is about five feet 10 inches tall and weighs about 250 pounds. He was last seen wearing a dark baseball cap, jeans and a beige sweater.

Anyone with information about the witness is asked to call Gatineau police at 819-243-2345, ext. 6007.
