Two people have been charged after 2,850 bags of contraband cigarettes were seized in Cornwall Thursday.

A Cornwall police officer tried to stop a 2000 Ford Excursion SUV on Brookdale Avenue. The driver accelerated but pulled into a parking lot, where the officer saw cardboard boxes filled with the cigarettes.

The RCMP believes the contraband was manufactured in the United States for sale in Canada. The SUV was also seized.

A 24-year-old Akwesasne man and a 22-year-old woman from Hogansburg, New York were charged under the Excise Act with possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped.

They will appear in Cornwall court on Jan. 26.
