Ottawa police are investigating an alleged assault after a West Way taxi driver reported being beat up by a stranger following a traffic incident on the Airport Parkway on Monday.

Sami Aldoboni says he suffered a broken arm in two places and a fractured finger as a result of the attack.

"Why this guy attacked me, this could happen to anyone. It's become like a jungle, you know," said Aldoboni, a computer systems analyst who has driven a cab for the last eight months.

Aldoboni says while he was driving on Ottawa's Airport Parkway on Monday, a vehicle tried to pass his taxi unsuccessfully. After that, Aldoboni says the driver followed his cab to the taxi holding area at Ottawa's International Airport where the beating happened.

"He got out from his truck and he start to argue with the driver. He start to punch him and push him and he fell down and he continued to punch him," said Samir Yassine, a West Way taxi driver who saw the incident unfold.

A witness who helped break up the fight says the assailant allegedly identified himself as an off-duty police officer.

"He took out his wallet and flipped through it and showed me his police identification card with a big smile on his face. And I said what's that's supposed to be, your back up? It's even worse that you are a police officer and you are doing all this stuff here," said Mohammad Atiya, another West Way taxi driver.

Atiya said the identification card was not a badge, but did display the man's photo, name and address.

Although Ottawa police are investigating, the identity of the man involved in the incident will not be released unless charges are laid.
