Police have made three arrests in connection with the deaths of three sisters and their aunt, whose bodies were pulled from a car submerged in the Rideau Canal near Kingston, Ont., according to a source close to CTV News.

Kingston police will update the media on a change in the status of their investigation at a news conference on Thursday at 2 p.m. Police said they won't comment on the story until then.

The bodies of Zainab Shafi, 19, and her sisters, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, were found in a vehicle submerged in about three metres of water on June 30. Their aunt, Rona Amir Mohammed, 50, was also found in the vehicle.

The family is from the north-end Montreal borough of St-Leonard. They were on their way home from a vacation to Niagara Falls, Ont. at the time of the incident.

The girls were born in Afghanistan and have four other siblings.
