The Ottawa Police Major Crimes Unit is investigating after a serious assault in the east-end.

Police said a man in his thirties, who uses a wheelchair, was assaulted at a home on Rothbury Crescent around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2015.  Police and paramedics arrived on scene after a panic alarm was triggered.

At this point, police do not believe it was a random attack.

"He had suffered what appeared to be a very savage beating," said Staff Sgt. Bruce Pirt. "He was beaten pretty badly and that's why Major Crimes is taking care of the case right now."

The victim's identity has not been released by police, but neighbours have identified the man as Ian Cope.

The victim was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition, where he has reportedly been placed in a medically induced coma.

Police said the victim is known to police, although it is not known how.

Police were still on scene more than 24 hours after the attack, searching the area and canvassing for witnesses.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Major Crimes or Crimestoppers.
