The Major Crimes Unit of the Ottawa Police is investigating a homicide in the city’s south end.

Police say a man’s body was discovered in the area of Russell Road and Southvale Crescent.

“Units arrived to find a man with apparently gunshot wounds. He subsequently died of his injuries,” says Major Crime Staff Sgt. Bruce Pirt.

Police are not saying where the man had been shot or how long he had been there.

“I am not going to comment on the timing of where we think the shot may have occurred or what happened or the number of shots,” says Pirt.

Police also say weather could have played a factor. The overnight windstorm could have drowned out any loud noises for potential witnesses.

Peter di Tommasso lives on Russell Road. “I woke up around 4 or 4:30. I thought it was just the wind but it could have been anything. I wake up to hear there is a dead body found on the ground.”

He says the incident is unnerving.

“It’s pretty surprising that it is right near my house. I didn’t expect it I had just moved in the area.”

Police have no suspects in custody and asking any witnesses to come forward.
