An Ottawa man who died in a plane crash near Barrie over the weekend has been identified as 61-year-old Bruce MacKinnon.
MacKinnon, who was a wildlife control specialist with Transport Canada, died when his homebuilt, single-seat airplane crashed and burst into flames at Lake Simcoe Regional Airport on Sunday.
Witnesses said MacKinnon was practicing a touch-and-go landing procedure when his plane took a nosedive.
Police delayed releasing MacKinnon's identity until they were able to contact his wife who was on vacation in Quebec.
MacKinnon had planned to fly to the area to join his wife and 10-year-old daughter.
The Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation to determine if the crash was caused by a technical problem or by pilot error.
Investigator Rae Simpson says something as minor as using the wrong screw can cause problems with home-built planes.
