A 42-year-old man faces several charges after leading police on a high-speed chase that ended after he drove his vehicle into the Trent River and swam to shore where he was arrested.

Belleville police said the pursuit happened after a routine attempt to stop the vehicle in the city's north end early Thursday morning.

The driver failed to stop his vehicle and led police through the city's downtown core and onto Highway 2. Police said officers reported travelling at high speeds, exceeding 160 kilometres per hour.

When the driver entered Quinte West, he drove his vehicle to Ontario Street and directly into the Trent River. Once the vehicle was in the water, the man got out and swam to shore where he was arrested. The vehicle completely sank in the water.

The man, who is from Frankford, faces six charges, including impaired driving, flight from police and driving a vehicle without insurance. He is scheduled to appear in court in September.
