Ottawa police have arrested 39 street level drug dealers who face 161 charges after a blitz on crack dealers in the city's downtown core.

Undercover officers made the arrests after focusing on drug dealing hot spots in and around the Byward Market.

Police also laid charges against an aggressive dealer who allegedly attempted to rob undercover officers.

In that instance, 23-year-old Thomas Breen was charged with attempted robbery and trafficking crack cocaine. Breen is currently in custody.

The blitz comes after Ottawa Police Chief Vern White promised to step up patrols this summer in an effort to control the city's downtown drug problem.
