Family members say a former Pembroke teacher, who was caught in the middle of a shootout and wild carjacking in Honduras, is showing some signs of improvement.

Dennis Spencer, 59, managed to say a raspy "hi" to his daughters on Sunday and started moving his arms and legs as he slowly wakes up from a medically-induced coma.

Spencer was shot in the upper body, causing bone fragments from his collar bone and shoulder to enter his brain on March 27.

The full extent of his injuries, however, won't be known until more tests are conducted.

The Pembroke native has been living in Honduras for four years, where he works as principal of Escuela Internacional La Lima, a small English-language school.

Hopes for his recovery have since spread online, where a Facebook group has more than 1,300 members and hundreds of messages.
