Belleville police have identified a 51-year-old Kingston man who was killed when he was hit by a Via Rail train outside the Belleville train station.
Police say Ralph Shaw was hit by a westbound train when he was crossing the tracks at Station Street Tuesday afternoon.
Witnesses say it appeared Shaw saw the approaching train and tried to beat it across the tracks.
The incident caused two-hour delays for two trains and about 300 Via Rail passengers while police investigated.
Police say Shaw was visiting friends in Belleville at the time of the incident. He was expected to take a later train to Toronto where he worked in construction.
Police are calling the incident an accident.
