Parks Canada will not allow the canal to be altered for Lansdowne Park

Parks Canada says leave the Rideau Canal alone.

Federal officials say it will not allow any altering of the historic waterway as part of the Landsdowne Park redevelopment.

One of the 5 urban park plans under consideration includes a large lagoon connected to the canal through a breach in the canal wall.

Parks Canada says the shape and form of the canal is one of the values that led to it's designation as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2007.

  Several designs to redevelop Lansdowne Park's green space include a pedestrian footbridge over the Rideau Canal. Plan B also includes a man-made island.
