City of Ottawa paramedics are wearing black ribbons on their uniforms to grieve the loss of one of their former colleagues.
Twenty-nine-year-old Gatineau paramedic Marie Lou Dubois was killed in a hit-and-run collision early Saturday morning on Highway 105 near Bouchette, Quebec, about 100 kilometres north of Ottawa.
She was on her way to work at the Maniwaki Paramedic Station when a man driving a stolen car drifted into oncoming traffic and slammed into her car. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Dubois recently graduated from La Cite Coll�giale in Ottawa and completed some of her on-road training with the City of Ottawa Paramedic Service.
"This is a tragic loss of a young paramedic at the beginning of her career. The paramedics she worked with here in Ottawa fondly remember Marie Lou," said Paul Morneau, paramedic team leader with the City of Ottawa Paramedic Service.
"All Ottawa paramedics extend our most sincere condolences to Marie Lou's family, friends and to all our paramedic colleagues with the Gatineau Paramedic Service."
The driver of the stolen car fled into the bush near the highway. It is not known if he tried to help Dubois. The suspect has short black hair and was wearing a white and blue shirt and dark pants.
On Sunday, police called off the canine unit in the hunt for the hit-and-run driver.
Flags at the Ottawa Paramedic Service Headquarters have been lowered to half-mast to mourn Dubois' death.
