Four Ottawa paramedics were inside the Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus last December when they saw Const. Eric Czapnik struggling with his attacker.

All four instinctively sprung into action.

Paramedic Craig MacInnes says he relives that day often and wonders if there was anything they could have done differently.

MacInnes says they acted on instinct despite putting themselves in harm's way. For that, they received the NH McNally award for bravery Thursday.

The honour was given by the Association of Municipal Emergency Medical Services of Ontario.

Suspended RCMP officer Kevin Gregson is charged for the murder.

The paramedics can't disclose the details of what happened on Dec. 29 because the case is in court.
