A skydiving instructor is in critical condition after something went wrong during his jump over Gatineau Sunday.

Emergency officials said they treated a man on the ground with significant head injuries near the Executive Gatineau-Ottawa Airport around 2 p.m.

A fellow jumper identified him as 35-year-old Steve Verner, a veteran who's made almost 1,000 jumps.

The co-owner of the Go Skydive school said he was practicing a precision diving technique called "swooping" for next year's national competition when he made a mistake.

"It's a high speed approach. You come in faster than you usually would, conventially with a parachute," said Pierre Carpentier.

Fellow jumpers said Verner was travelling around 80 kilometres an hour when the incident occured.

Emergency workers said he was unconscious when he landed.

"It had nothing to do with the equipment, it's really just the judgement," Carpentier said. "(That's) the type of risk when you are doing things like that."
