Hundreds of people packed the Agudeth Israel Congregation synagogue on Friday to say their final goodbyes to a prominent member of Ottawa's Jewish community, who died after a brutal attack while on vacation in Barbados.

Terry Schwarzfeld, 60, died in hospital Wednesday after she was attacked by a would-be robber while taking an afternoon walk on an isolated stretch of beach on Feb. 28.

During the attack, Schwarzfeld took a blow to the head. She was initially treated at a hospital in Barbados and was later transported to Ottawa where she spent two weeks in a coma.

Schwarzfeld was recently elected as the national president of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO, a leading Jewish women's philanthropic organization.

The organization has since named a children's daycare in her hounour. The daycare helps give underprivileged Arab and Jewish children a good start to life.
