An Ottawa woman has died and her baby is seriously injured after a head-on collision this weekend on a highway in Santa Cruz, Calif. Police suspect the driver who hit her was under the influence of drugs.

Jaye Peterson Wass, 29, was driving with her son in a rear-facing car seat when a jeep coming in the opposite direction crossed into her lane and collided with her car.

Wass died at the scene. Ten-month old Kyler Wass is recovering and has been reunited with his father Mike, according to California Highway Patrol.

Mike Wass, who works at Adobe in Ottawa, was in California on a business trip and was joined by his family, all from the Barrhaven community.

The 63-year-old driver of the Jeep is suspected of being under the influence of marijuana.

He died three hours after the crash.
