Ottawa police have charged a 26-year-old Ottawa woman with aggravated assault after a vicious beating put another woman in hospital where she continues to fight for her life.

Arlene Leahey, 44, was knocked unconscious during an altercation early Saturday morning in an alley near the Shepherds of Good Hope homeless shelter. The area, which is known to many who live on the streets as 'the sanctuary,' is a sort of outdoor haven for homeless men and women who want to get away from troubles on the street.

But on Saturday, that sanctuary turned violent for Leahey, who was in the area to speak to a support nurse at the Murray Street shelter.

Paul Soucy, executive director of the Shepherds of Good Hope, says Leahey is well-known to his staff and residents.

"We've known Arlene for years. She's a regular; she stayed here for years but now has supportive housing somewhere else, but comes down to visit," Saucy told CTV Ottawa on Monday.

"Our prayers are with her and her family and we hope that she recovers."

Louisa Killiktee was arrested in connection with the incident shortly after officers arrived at the scene on Saturday. She was charged with aggravated assault on Monday.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Ottawa police at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493.
