The provincial byelection in Ottawa-Vanier will take place Nov. 17, according to Elections Ontario.

The election date was announced Wednesday morning.

The unofficial race has already begun; the Progressive Conservative candidate Andre Marin, the former Ontario ombudsman, has been aggressively campaigning.

The Liberals nominated uOttawa law professor Nathalie Des Rosiers over the weekend as their candidate.

The seat had belonged to Madeleine Meilleur since 2003. She retired in June to spend more time with her family.

The provincial Liberals have won every election in the riding since 1971.
