It is a very difficult day at an Ottawa intermediate school.

An Ottawa teenager has been killed in a car crash near Watertown in upstate New York.

Police say 14-year-old Carine Rabay was not wearing her seatbelt when her family’s SUV left the road on Interstate 81 Sunday afternoon.  The SUV hit a guardrail, overturned and rolled down an embankment.  Carine was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.  Her 44-year-old mother and 9-year-old sister were both airlifted to hospital and are expected to recover.  Her father and 77-year-old grandmother were treated and released from hospital.

Rabay's brother, Joe, has started a seatbelt campaign called "Wear it for Carine".

Rabay was a grade 8 student at Frank Ryan School in Nepean.  The principal says support counsellors will be on hand to help the students and staff deal with this loss. The school will also hold a private memorial in honour of Rabay.
