The Ottawa Senators have a new head coach.

Paul MacLean will step behind the bench to lead the Ottawa Senators next season. The club is expected to make the announcement as early as Tuesday.

MacLean has spent the last seven years working as an assistant coach under head coach Mike Babcock with the Detroit Red Wings and Anaheim Ducks.

He also worked under Ottawa Senators General Manager Bryan Murray in Anaheim, before Murray moved to the capital.

MacLean has no head coaching experience in the NHL and limited head coaching experience in the minors. However, he's a former player who played about 10 years in the NHL, mostly in Winnipeg.

MacLean is the fourth head coach hired by Murray since 2007, when Murray vacated that position himself.

Former Senators head coach Cory Clouston was fired this year after the team wrapped up a dismal season that saw the Senators finish near the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a record of 32-40-10.
