OTTAWA -- Ottawa Public Health is reporting 46 more people in the city have tested positive for COVID-19, an increase over the 34 positive test results announced on Tuesday.

Positive test results fell on Monday following a significant spike on Sunday, but have been steadily rising the last two days. Active cases have been on the rise for the last six days. 

Across the province, more than 1,700 new cases of COVID-19 were reported with the vast majority in the GTA. Thirty-five more people in Ontario have died.

According to Ottawa Public Health's COVID-19 dashboard, there have been 8,567 total laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ottawa since the pandemic began.

Two more people with COVID-19 have died, bringing the city's pandemic death toll to 378 residents. 

In the past seven days, Nov. 26 to Dec. 2 inclusive, OPH has reported an average of 44.7 new COVID-19 cases per day. In the previous seven days, Nov. 19 to 25 inclusive, OPH reported an average of 37.7 new COVID-19 cases per day.

TESTING

Ontario health officials say 44,226 COVID-19 tests were performed across the province on Tuesday and 49,574 people in Ontario are waiting for COVID-19 test results.

Figures for Ottawa from the Ottawa COVID-19 Testing Taskforce are due later in the afternoon.

HOSPITALIZATIONS IN OTTAWA

The number of people in Ottawa hospitals with COVID-19 fell slightly on Wednesday to 23, from 24 on Tuesday.

One person is in the intensive care unit.

Of the people in hospital, one is in their 20s, two are in their 40s, three are in their 60s, six are in their 70s, eight are in their 80s (one in the ICU), and three are 90 or older.

ACTIVE CASES OF COVID-19 IN OTTAWA

The number of people in Ottawa with known active cases of COVID-19 has risen for the sixth day in a row after falling below 300 in late November.

OPH reported 362 active cases on Wednesday, up from 351 from Tuesday.

Another 33 recoveries were also reported on Wednesday, bringing the city's number of resolved cases to 7,827.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 is the number of total laboratory-confirmed cases minus the numbers of resolved cases and deaths. A case is considered resolved 14 days after known symptom onset or positive test result.

 

COVID-19 CASES IN OTTAWA BY AGE CATEGORY

Here is a breakdown of all known COVID-19 cases in Ottawa by age category:

  • 0-9 years old: Five new cases (586 cases total)
  • 10-19 years-old: Five new cases (991 cases total)
  • 20-29 years-old: 10 new cases (1,756 cases total)
  • 30-39 years-old: Nine new cases (1,154 cases total)
  • 40-49 years-old: Four new cases (1,076 cases total)
  • 50-59 years-old: Seven new cases (999 cases total)
  • 60-69-years-old: One new case (665 cases total)
  • 70-79 years-old: Four new cases (442 cases total)
  • 80-89 years-old: One new case (532 cases total)
  • 90+ years old: Zero new cases (366 cases total)

COVID-19 CASES AROUND THE REGION

According to provincial figures, five more people in the Eastern Ontario Health Unit's region have tested positive for COVID-19.

Six new infections were reported in the Hastings Prince Edward Public Health region.

Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington Public Health reported two new positive test results.

One new person in the Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit's region has tested positive for COVID-19.

There are no new cases of COVID-19 in the Renfrew County and District Health Unit's area.

Quebec health officials reported 14 new cases of COVID-19 in the Outaouais region, which includes Gatineau. No new COVID-19 related deaths were reported in the Outaouais on Wednesday.

INSTITUTIONAL OUTBREAKS

Ottawa Public Health is reporting COVID-19 outbreaks at 26 institutions in Ottawa, including long-term care homes, retirement homes, daycares, hospitals and schools.

New outbreaks were added at Glen Ogilvie Public School and Roland Michener Public School.

An outbreak at the Waterford Retirement Residence has ended.

There are five active community outbreaks: one linked to an unidentified community organization, one from an unspecified social event and three at unidentified workplaces in the city.

The schools and childcare spaces currently experiencing outbreaks are:

A single laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19 in a resident or staff member of a long-term care home, retirement home or shelter triggers an outbreak response, according to Ottawa Public Health. In childcare settings, a single confirmed, symptomatic case in a staff member, home daycare provider, or child triggers an outbreak.

Under provincial guidelines, a COVID-19 outbreak in a school is defined as two or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in students and/or staff in a school with an epidemiological link, within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the school (including transportation and before or after school care).
