OTTAWA -- Ottawa Public Health is reporting 54 new cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa on Sunday, the lowest number of new cases in a day all month.

There have been two days of record high case counts in October, and four days where the count was over 100. This is the first day this month there has been fewer than 60 cases.

Across Ontario, 649 new cases of COVID-19 were reported.

The new figures from OPH on Sunday bring the total number of all laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa to 5,427.

In the past seven days, there has been an average of 102.7 new cases of COVID-19 reported. Last Sunday, there was an average of 92.1 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the previous seven days.

No new deaths were reported on Sunday. Ottawa's death toll from COVID-19 stands at 297.

TESTING

Ontario performed 44,138 COVID-19 tests in the past 24 hours. The current testing backlog in the province stands at 45,837 tests still under investigation across the province, down from 56,138 on Saturday. Ottawa Public Health's COVID-19 dashboard does not show how many Ottawa residents are waiting for test results. The most recent figure from the dashboard says 1,467 people were tested for COVID-19 on Oct. 7, with 3.9 per cent of all tests coming back positive.

HOSPITALIZATIONS

Ottawa Public Health says there are 37 people in the hospital with COVID-19, down by two from Saturday's figure of 39.

Nine people remain in intensive care, the same figure that was shared on Saturday.

On Oct. 4, there were 27 people in hospital with COVID-19 complications and five in intensive care.

OPH says, as of Oct. 7, 101 per cent of acute beds across the city's health-care system are occupied, including 44 per cent of all ICU beds and 15 per cent of ICU ventilator beds.

ACTIVE CASES OF COVID-19 IN OTTAWA

Ottawa Public Health is reporting 816 known active cases of COVID-19, down from 847 on Saturday.

The decrease was driven by a larger increase of recoveries than new cases.

OPH says 84 additional people have recovered from COVID-19 symptoms in Ottawa, bringing the city's recovery rate to 4,313 total cases.

The number of active cases is the number of all lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 minus the numbers of resolved cases and deaths. A case is considered resolved 14 days after known symptom onset or positive test result.

A single laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19 in a resident or staff member of a long-term care home, retirement home or shelter triggers an outbreak response, according to Ottawa Public Health. In childcare settings, a single confirmed, symptomatic case in a staff member, home daycare provider, or child triggers an outbreak.

Under provincial guidelines, a COVID-19 outbreak in a school is defined as two or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in students and/or staff in a school with an epidemiological link, within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the school (including transportation and before or after school care).
