OTTAWA -- Six more Ottawa residents have died due to COVID-19

Ottawa Public Health announced the new deaths linked to COVID-19 in its daily epidemiology report on Friday afternoon, along with 41 new cases of novel coronavirus.

Since the first case of COVID-19 on March 11, there have been 7,766 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa, including 356 deaths. Twenty-two Ottawa residents have died due to COVID-19 related illnesses in November.

The 41 new cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa on Friday comes one day after Ottawa saw the highest one-day increase in new cases in November. There were 91 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. Despite the one-day spike, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vera Etches told reporters she was "encouraged" by the recent COVID-19 numbers in Ottawa.

Across Ontario, there are 1,396 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday. The province says there are 440 new cases in Toronto, 440 in Peel Region and 155 in York Region.

HOSPITALIZATIONS IN OTTAWA

Sixty people are currently in an Ottawa hospital with COVID-19 related illnesses, including eight in the intensive care unit.

Of the people in hospital, one is between the ages of 10 and 19, three are in their 30s, two people are in their 40s, five are in their 50s, eight are in their 60s, 13 are in their 70s, 17 are in their 80s, and 12 are 90 or older.

ACTIVE CASES OF COVID-19 IN OTTAWA

Ottawa Public Health reports there are 493 active cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa, down from 495 active cases on Thursday.

A total 6,917 people recovered after testing positive for COVID-19.

The number of active cases is the number of total laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 minus the numbers of resolved cases and deaths. A case is considered resolved 14 days after known symptom onset or positive test result.

CASES OF COVID-19 IN OTTAWA BY AGE CATEGORY

Here is a breakdown of all known COVID-19 cases in Ottawa by age category:

  • 0-9 years old: Zero new cases (502 cases total)
  • 10-19 years-old: 5 new cases (887 cases total)
  • 20-29 years-old: 11 new cases (1,596 cases total)
  • 30-39 years-old: Zero new cases (1,020 cases total)
  • 40-49 years-old: Two new case (984 cases total)
  • 50-59 years-old: Four new cases (911 cases total)
  • 60-69-years-old: Zero new case2 (608 cases total)
  • 70-79 years-old: Five new cases (401 cases total)
  • 80-89 years-old: 10 new cases (510 cases total)
  • 90+ years old: Seven new cases (347 cases total)
 

COVID-19 ACROSS THE REGION

There are four new cases in the Eastern Ontario Health Unit region.

Six new cases were reported in the Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington Health Unit.

Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit reports three new cases.

There are no new cases in Renfrew County.

INSTITUTIONAL OUTBREAKS

Ottawa Public Health is reporting COVID-19 outbreaks at 31 institutions in Ottawa, including long-term care homes, retirement homes, daycares, hospitals and schools.

A new COVID-19 outbreaks was reported Friday at Forest Hill long-term care home.

COVID-19 outbreaks are over at Lord Lansdowne retirement home and Rockcliffe Retirement home.

The schools and childcare spaces currently experiencing outbreaks are:

A single laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19 in a resident or staff member of a long-term care home, retirement home or shelter triggers an outbreak response, according to Ottawa Public Health. In childcare settings, a single confirmed, symptomatic case in a staff member, home daycare provider, or child triggers an outbreak.

Under provincial guidelines, a COVID-19 outbreak in a school is defined as two or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in students and/or staff in a school with an epidemiological link, within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the school (including transportation and before or after school care).
