An Ottawa scientist says he's made an important development in the search for a cure for Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Michael Schlossmacher says he's found a link between the production of a protein in the brain that's found in patients who have Parkinson's disease, and a gene that causes high levels of iron in the same area.

Schlossmacher says his research has found a way to address the protein -- something that can hopefully lead researchers to a cure.

The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday.
