An Ottawa company that is a world leader in the e-commerce field has secured $7 million in financing.

Harley Finkelstein of Shopify says the money will allow for "rapid expansion of staff and services to customers."

Shopify helps companies quickly set up a website for online shopping. It designs templates that a company uses to showcase their products.

In all, some 10,000 firms now use Shopify. Customers include GM, Amnesty International and the band Foo Fighters.

"We founded Shopify because it was too difficult to get an online store up and running," said Tobias Lutke, CEO and co-founder of the company. "While we are already profitable, the support

gives us additional resources."

Shopify recently moved into larger quarters in downtown Ottawa and now has 30 full-time workers.

These kind of financing deals have been rare for Ottawa tech companies for the last two to three years.
