With just a month to go until Ottawa Police Chief Vern White leaves to become a senator, the search is on for the capital's next top cop.

The police services board says the new chief will come from the service's own ranks.

"The board today has decided to go internally with the process of selecting the next chief," said councillor Eli El-Chantiry. "Today we have a good group of officers who can apply."

Two candidates are already being cited as potential successors—deputy police chiefs Charles Bordeleau and Gilles LaRochelle.

"They've been very strong in the community," said White. "I think its absolutely integral to being a strong leader within the organization."

The police services board will appoint an interim leader by the end of March when White leaves for the Senate.
