Ottawa police are warning the public that scammers are threatening a police visit to their home if they don’t wire them money.

Police said they’ve got several 911 calls Saturday saying a caller told them to pay a fine by wiring money or police would be sent to their home.

The calls were shown on caller ID as 1-911-111-1111, which is a “spoofed” or masked number from the Internet.

Ottawa police said neither they nor any other police service would call to collect fines or money owed from lawsuits.

They’re advising the public to not send any money and to hang up the phone.

Anyone who got one of these calls or wants more information can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 on weekdays.
