Two people are recovering in hospital after being shot by Ottawa police during a disturbance call at a highrise apartment building in the city's west end early Monday morning.

Ontario's Special Investigation Unit is investigating the case and says a 25-year-old woman, who they say was armed with a knife, was shot once in the chest at apartment 1208 at 810 Pinecrest Road at about 4 a.m. The SIU says a 27-year-old man was also shot in the face.

The pair is being treated for non-life threatening injuries and both are in stable condition in hospital.

The man, who was at the woman's apartment at the time of the incident, was scheduled to undergo surgery at the Ottawa Hospital's civic campus Monday afternoon.

Investigators spent most of the morning and early afternoon talking to residents, taking statements and gathering evidence. A knife has since been recovered from the scene.

Residents who live in the building told CTV Ottawa the incident comes as a surprise in a neighbourhood many consider safe.

"Pure surprise. I didn't hear a single thing last night that would have sounded like an officer firing on someone," said Curtis Robertson, who lives just one floor below the location of the shooting.

"People living here, sometimes I hearing fighting . . . a couple of apartments only, but never happen any problems. That's I told you, very nice building," said Dan Luu, who has lived in the apartment complex for eight years.

The SIU is called in when police are involved in incidents involving the public which result in death or serious injury.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Special Investigation Unit at 1-800-787-8529, ext. 1867.
