Ottawa police officers take children on Christmas shopping spree

It's a tradition this time of year.

Ottawa police officers and the Carlingwood Shopping Centre gave children in the city an early Christmas present with their annual "Shop with a Cop" event.

Twenty-five children from St. Elizabeth School got to go on a shopping spree Friday, with a $200 gift card donated by the mall, accompanied by local police officers.

From toys to clothes and even sweet treats, organizer Sgt. Gabriel Vieira says it's always a special time of year for the officers.

"It just makes it all worth it," Vieira said, "seeing them have so much fun, it reminds me of the fun that I had when I was a kid. It makes me happy. The officers love it."

This is the 17th year that Ottawa police organized the event. Officers treat the kids to lunch, meet Santa Claus, and then escort them through the mall where they help the children complete their shopping wish lists.

The event was originally organized in 2006 by Deputy Chief Trish Ferguson. She says while it's about giving back to the community, it's important for the officers as well, wanting children to know they can trust the police.

"I've heard of relationships that have lasted for years beyond today and that's our hope that kids get a different impression of a police officer than maybe they would see in the community." Ferguson said.

The shopping spree paired each child with a police officer, creating a memorable experience for both. The children eagerly explored stores throughout the mall, looking for their favourite items to buy for themselves and loved ones.

Carlingwood Shopping Centre general manager Rob Caldwell says he is always happy to be a part of the "Shop with a Cop" event. He adds it's always special for him knowing the mall and officers are helping make family holidays that much more special.

"Seeing the kids at the mall, they pull the cops over because they see a bright, shiny toy they want and they have the funds to be able to do it today, like the sky's the limit," Caldwell said, "to make something like that happen is just an incredible feeling."

Following the shopping, children wrapped their presents for their family members with the help from officers and were given a ride home in the police cruiser.
