The Ottawa Police Service confirmed one of its officers was killed on his way to work Sunday afternoon in a collision in Metcalfe, in rural south Ottawa.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. Sunday on 8th Line Road at Parkway Road.

"We have spoken to members of his family and have offered our sympathy and support," said Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau. "All members of our Service mourn his loss."

Late Sunday night, condolences were pouring in online for 32-year-old Mike Robillard, who was a husband, father and is described as being well-respected.

Ottawa Fire Services confirm the male victim was the sole occupant of a late model Honda.

EMS crews began extricating the man from his vehicle, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ottawa Fire Services says a mother and 7-year-old child were in the other vehicle, a Dodge Caravan.

The mother was extricated from the driver's seat after her lower body became trapped in the vehicle. She was taken to hospital.

The child was removed from a car seat, and treated by paramedics and bystanders at the scene before being transported to hospital.

The cause of the crash is under investigation but nearby residents say that strech of 8th Line Road is dangerous due to hidden intersections and speeding.
