Ottawa police are reminding residents to be cautious as they investigate the capital's sixth homicide this year.

"We cannot confirm that people should be concerned. The rules of safety always stand -- don't open your door for strangers, and if you see something suspicious going on or you hear something suspicious, do not hesitate to call the police," said Const. Jean-Paul Vincelette of the Ottawa police.

The safety reminder comes after a 46-year-old man was found dead inside his Manor Park home on Chelsea Drive, east of St. Laurent Boulevard and north of Montreal Road just after 4 p.m. Sunday. The man has been identified as Simoahmed El Fenne of Ottawa.

Police confirmed Monday the death, which was initially deemed suspicious, is now being treated as a homicide investigation. So far, police have no suspects.

"The body was discovered by an acquaintance but it's too early at this time to discuss who committed this crime or what motives were," Vincelette told CTV Ottawa.

The area around the home remained cordoned off Monday as police continued to scour for clues that could help them solve the crime.

Police were also going door-to-door to gather information from those living in the neighbourhood.

"They just asked me if I saw anything unusual in the last few days," said one area resident.

"It's shocking, it really is. You don't expect something like that to happen a few doors down from you, so I think it's a little bit of an eye-opener."

An autopsy was conducted on El Fenne's body Monday. Police are still waiting for autopsy results to confirm how he died.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ottawa police major crime section at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-TIPS.
