Ottawa police have charged an Edmonton man with second-degree murder in connection to an attack in Ottawa's west end last summer.

The arrest comes five months after Sean Murphy, 51, was attacked near a convenience store at the corner of Merivale Road and Shillington Avenue.

Police say Murphy was found injured and unconscious in a parking lot after leaving an area bar on Aug. 26. He died of his injuries on Sept. 16.

"There was an apparent beating at the time, but this is still part of the evidence that is going to be presented in court, so unfortunately we can't go into the circumstances," said Ottawa police Const. Alain Boucher.

Although police originally pegged the case an accident, officers later upgraded Murphy's death to a homicide investigation.

Police arrested Mohamed Jama Yusuf, 20, on a Canada-wide warrant in Edmonton on Tuesday.

He appeared in Ottawa court on Friday.
