Ottawa one step closer to naming 'Vimy Bridge'

Published:

After numerous delays, the $48 million Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge connecting Barrhaven and Riverside South is set to open Saturday, July 12, 2014.

In a gallery filled with veterans and members of the Royal Canadian Legion, the name "Vimy Bridge" became one step closer to reality.

The renaming of the connection between Barrhaven and Riverside South was approved at Ottawa Transportation Committee.

While the construction of the bridge was beleaguered by delays and cost overruns, naming the bridge after one of Canada’s greatest war victories will likely make it a source of pride with the community.

The name was first brought forward by members of the Legion. It received strong support from hundreds of people during the public consultation process.

The name still has to be approved at council.
