Ericsson announced Friday it is hiring 1,000 new workers in North America.

The bulk of the hiring will be in two cities in Texas, but there will be 200 new jobs in Canada with most in Montreal.

Ericsson has about 1,000 workers in Ottawa and 2,000 in Montreal, with about 3,500 in the two Texas cities . Richardson, Texas is a former Nortel operation that was part of the assets purchased by Ericsson from the bankrupt Nortel.

The Ottawa operation is largely focused on the new wireless generation called LTE.

Ericsson spokesperson Patricia MacLean told CTV Ottawa that North America now accounts for "25 per cent of Ericsson's global revenues and that makes North America our largest single market."

MacLean also said they remain in discussions about a future new Ottawa home. They are located at the old Nortel campus on Carling Avenue, but their lease from the federal government expires in November of next year.

MacLean said it does not appear Ericsson will stay at the campus, so they are looking at moving to an existing location or building a new facility.

A move out of Ottawa is not on the table.

"The skill set and work being done in Ottawa is separate from our Montreal operations so they would not be combined," MacLean said.

"We have not signed any contract yet on where we will go."

The department of National Defence will eventually take over the whole complex and four other companies will have to move out.
