An Ottawa man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the attempted murder of his girlfriend in July 2008.
Alvin Persaud was sentenced on Tuesday in connection with a shooting at a south-end Ottawa home that put Cathleen Lavoie in a long-term care facility where she continues to recover from a serious gunshot wound to her neck.
The judge ruled that Persaud had accepted responsibility for the crime. He will also get credit for time already served in jail.
"I sincerely regret my actions that night and I am truly sorry," Persaud told the court prior to receiving his sentence.
Lavoie's injuries prevent her from caring for her three children, who have been separated and are now being raised in three different homes.
In her victim impact statement, she said she feels like her independence has been shattered and her life has been stolen.
"I cry on my own and for my children," Lavoie said.
"My life as it was is totally gone: I've lost my home, my children and my life."
