OTTAWA - A 34-year-old Ottawa man will spend two years in jail for beating his roommate to death with aluminum crutches.

Carl St. Cyr was sentenced Thursday to seven-and-a-half years in prison for his role in the death of Domenic Doyon in May, 2009.

With credit for time served, St. Cyr will spend two years in jail after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Months before Doyon was killed, St. Cyr said the 33-year-old needed to have his head bashed in because he disapproved of Doyon's relationship with a 14-year-old girl.

In handing down his sentence, the judge admitted the relationship was improper but wasn't a licence to kill.

A second-degree murder trial St. Cyr's co-accused in the case is scheduled for the fall.
