A 61-year-old Ottawa man died Sunday morning after his homemade aircraft burst into flames while landing near Barrie.

The man was flying a single-seat RV-3 plane, which was built from a kit, and arrived at Lake Simcoe Regional Airport in Oro-Medonte Township at about 10:30 a.m.

Witnesses said he was coming in to land when the plane suddenly caught fire. Responding crews found the plane burning out of control on the runway. The pilot was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police say the man is from Ottawa.

The regional coroner's office had to be called in to help identify the body, OPP Const. Pamela Higham told CTV.ca on Sunday.

Police are not releasing the name of the man until next of kin are contacted.
