An Ottawa man is charged with stealing credit card information after several people, who donated to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario telethon in May, called to complain about fraudulent purchases.

Luc Andre Boileau, 38, is charged with possessing six credit card numbers, possessing 14 items worth up to $5,000 each, possessing two prohibited weapons and breaching probation.

"A search warrant was conducted on his home and we found two cans of mace," said Det. Chris Rhone, who is leading the investigation.

The CHEO Foundation notified police on June 17 shortly after receiving complaints from donors about fradulent charges or attempted charges on their credit cards, Rhone added.

"It was determined quite quickly that the main suspect was Mr. Boileau, and the investigation basically led to him being charged," he said.

The Ottawa police fraud unit investigated the complaints. Boileau appeared in court Monday and remains in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
