OTTAWA -- An Ottawa man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a drive-by shooting in the city last summer.

Ottawa police say 24-year-old Michael Belleus is charged in the August 2012 slaying of Levy Kasende.

The 22-year-old was fatally shot in front of his on-again-off-again girlfriend's house (in Blackburn Hamlet).

Police said they made multiple arrests in the case Thursday but did not say how many people had been arrested. The investigation is continuing.

In March, police had received an anonymous letter about the case and appealed to the author to come forward.

Three months earlier, police had released a photo of a silver Mazda minivan found burned out in the area, hoping it would produce some clues.

Kasende had just finished making a phone call when he was killed.

"It's a cumulative thing where evidence has been gathered over the last nine months and a case has been built together," Staff Sgt. Bruce Pirt said Thursday.

"It finally came together today resulting in a number of arrests."
