OTTAWA - The North American Soccer League is coming to the nation's capital.
The continent's No. 2 professional league announced Monday that Ottawa has been awarded an expansion franchise.
No timetable was given for when the team will begin play.
The club will be owned by the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, which has also been awarded a conditional CFL franchise.
Both teams will play at a re-developed Frank Clair Stadium. Work on the aging site is expected to begin later this year.
"As we continue to expand and collectively grow professional soccer in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean, Ottawa is a natural market with a vibrant business community, large soccer fan base and an exceptional ownership group," NASL commissioner David Downs said in a release.
The Montreal Impact is playing in the NASL this season, but is slated to move up into Major League Soccer in 2012.
FC Edmonton is the NASL's other Canadian team.
