A major artery for commuters who travel between Ottawa and Gatineau has been closed after structural concerns were discovered on a bridge that connects the two cities.

Public Works closed Chaudire Bridge Wednesday night after discovering deterioration in the masonry arches. A thorough inspection of the bridge is ongoing and police report it will remain closed until further notice.

As a result, Booth Street is closed to northbound drivers at Wellington Street in Ottawa. Across the river, police are also blocking traffic on Eddy Street at Laurier Avenue.

The closure caused major delays Thursday morning and police are advising commuters to take alternate routes.

Adding to the commuter chaos, the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge linking Gatineau to King Edward Avenue was also reduced to one lane for maintenance work Thursday morning.
