Ottawa Public Health has issued a frostbite warning starting Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2014 as temperatures plunge into the danger zone.
Health officials say the warning will last “until further notice” because of this week’s frigid forecast.
With a wind chill of -35, exposed skin can freeze in less than 10 minutes; overexposure can lead to severe injury or even death.
CTV Ottawa’s J.J Clarke says the deep freeze is here to stay, at least for the next few days.
“The recovery will be gradual and slow, it main not come until next week.”
City officials will be urging people to get off the streets and into warming centres, particularly vulnerable people.
Anyone who sees a homeless person at risk in the cold should call 3-1-1.
