An Ottawa man convicted in a fatal 1989 gay-bashing incident has been found dead in his cell in Laval, Que.

The body of 36-year-old Jeffrey Lalonde was discovered on Monday. A coroner is currently investigating to try to determine how he died.

Lalonde was convicted of throwing Chateau Laurier waiter Alain Brossard off a bridge, in a crime that police said was motivated by hate.

The murder led to the creation of Canada's first hate crime squad.
