The longtime publisher of the Ottawa Citizen will retire next week after spending 35 years with the newspaper.

Jim Orban's retirement is set to begin Aug. 6. He is planning to pursue other opportunities, the newspaper said.

The announcement comes one day after new owner Paul Godfrey addressed Citizen staff about his vision for the future.

However, Orban says his retirement isn't connected to the visit, the timing was simply right.

"It was a difficult decision, a decision I continue to reflect on 24-7," Orban told CTV Ottawa. He added the decision was the right thing to do for his staff.

Although Orban is retiring, he plans to continue his volunteer work with various local charities.

Under Orban's leadership, the Citizen won 15 National Newspaper Association awards and 21 wins from the Canadian Association of Journalists.
