The victim and suspect in a bizarre murder case in which a body was found stuffed inside a suitcase in downtown Montreal are both from the Ottawa area.

Police charged a 33-year-old man with second-degree murder on Friday after he turned himself in to Ottawa police the previous night.

The man will appear in a Montreal courtroom via video link on Saturday morning.

A passerby made the gruesome discovery when he saw a foot sticking out of a suitcase outside an apartment building in downtown Montreal at about 8:25 a.m. on Thursday.

Police say the 29-year-old male victim had obvious signs of violence on his body. Investigators say the victim and suspect knew each other.

Police have not released any names.
