Residents in Ottawa South are speaking out against a plan to build a shelter for battered women in their neighbourhood.

Those who attended a public meeting Thursday said they aren't opposed to Interval House; rather they don't want such a large building built on such a small piece of land in a residential neighbourhood.

"A facility this size . . . with office space, for $3 million. It doesn't fit in the neighbourhood. It shouldn't be there," said opponent Brett Pollock.

Residents say they're also concerned expansion would prevent the shelter from meeting the needs of women fleeing domestic violence in the future.

Despite opposition, construction is set to start next week.
